Modernism or Postmodernism?
Postmodern literature draws on some of the same ideals that are emblematic of the Modernist period. So let’s look at the key elements and philosophies of Modernism that, importantly, continue and evolve within the Postmodern era:
- Blurring the line between what is considered ‘high’ or ‘low’ forms of art.
- Rejection of definitive art forms
- Prioritising how art comes to be rather than following the forms set by predecessors
- Emphasis on fragmentation of thought, language, writing and forms.
- Rejection of traditional narrative forms. The Modernist era saw a rising experimentation in narrative forms i.e. James Joyce’s Ulysses.
